The one rule that applies everywhere

Microchip before rabies vaccine — always. Almost every country requires an ISO 11784/11785-compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before or on the same day as the current rabies vaccination. If the chip came after the vaccine, the vaccination is considered invalid and you'll need to start over. This single detail causes more failed trips than anything else.

Coverage by region

European Union (15 countries)

Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Switzerland, and the EU as a whole follow EU Regulation 576/2013. Pets entering from outside the EU need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an accredited vet no more than 10 days before arrival. A rabies titer test is required if traveling from certain countries. The AHC is valid for 4 months of travel within the EU after entry. Starting April 22, 2026, updated EU pet passport regulations are in effect — Pawlo tracks these automatically.

United Kingdom

Post-Brexit, the UK no longer accepts EU Pet Passports from most non-EU countries. Pets must enter as manifest cargo (not in-cabin) on approved routes. A tapeworm treatment must be administered by a vet 1–5 days before arrival. A GB Pet Health Certificate is required, issued no more than 10 days before travel. This is one of the most documentation-intensive destinations in Europe.

Americas (10 countries)

USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, and Uruguay. The US updated its CDC dog import rules in August 2024 — all dogs entering the US now require a CDC Dog Import Form, must be at least 6 months old, and must have a microchip. Dogs from high-risk rabies countries face additional requirements including a US-issued rabies vaccine or a titer test with 28-day wait. Canada and Mexico remain the easiest destinations — a microchip, valid rabies vaccine, and vet-issued health certificate within 10 days of travel covers most cases.

Asia & Pacific (8 countries)

Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines. Japan and Australia have the strictest requirements globally. Japan requires a minimum of 180 days of preparation including two rabies vaccinations, a titer test with a 180-day wait period, and advance notification to the Animal Quarantine Service. Australia requires pets to travel from an approved country, complete a 10-day quarantine on arrival, and meet strict parasite treatment requirements. Pawlo will flag immediately if your timeline is insufficient.

Middle East & Africa (5 countries)

UAE, Israel, Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco. Requirements vary significantly — UAE and Israel have well-documented processes similar to Europe, while South Africa and Morocco require government-endorsed health certificates. Coverage is growing — contact us if your destination isn't listed.

How difficulty levels work

Easy (green)

Microchip + valid rabies vaccine + vet health certificate issued within 10 days of travel. Most healthy, vaccinated pets qualify with 2–4 weeks of preparation.

Medium (amber)

All of the above, plus a titer test, specific government-endorsed certificates, or destination-specific treatments. Requires 6–12 weeks of advance planning.

Difficult (red)

Extended preparation timelines of 6+ months, quarantine on arrival, or highly specific documentation chains. Pawlo will tell you on day one if your timeline is realistic.
