22 airlines tracked.
Each airline layers its own pet rules on top of country requirements — carrier dimensions, weight limits, breed restrictions, seasonal embargoes, and fees. Pawlo tracks them all and flags conflicts with your specific route before you book.
Tier 1: Most pet-friendly for international travel
These carriers have clear, well-documented pet policies, allow in-cabin travel for small pets on international routes, and have reasonable fees. Best options for most pet families.
Iberia
In-cabin pets up to 8kg including carrier. Soft carrier max 45×35×25cm. One of the best options for US/LATAM to Spain routes. Madrid hub is well-equipped for international pet arrivals. Larger pets travel in the hold.
Lufthansa
In-cabin pets up to 8kg including carrier. Strict EU-compliant documentation checks at check-in. One of the most thorough validation processes in Europe — bring every document. Cargo available for larger pets.
Air France
Small pets (up to 8kg) allowed in cabin. Larger pets travel in the hold. Paris CDG is a major international hub with good pet handling facilities. Health certificate required for all international routes.
KLM
In-cabin pets up to 8kg. Amsterdam Schiphol hub with good pet facilities. Similar EU-compliant rules to Lufthansa and Air France. Health certificate required.
Tier 2: Good for domestic, restricted for international
These carriers allow in-cabin pets on domestic routes but have significant restrictions for international travel — especially transatlantic. Read the fine print before booking.
American Airlines
In-cabin pets (under 20lbs including carrier) on domestic US, Canada, and Mexico routes only. Transatlantic routes: no in-cabin pets — cargo via AA Cargo only. Fee is $150 each way for cabin. Brachycephalic breeds not allowed in cargo. No cargo to UK/Ireland for general public — only AA Cargo to LHR and MAN.
Delta Air Lines
In-cabin pets on domestic routes only. Transatlantic: no pets allowed for general public (military/FSO exceptions apply). $150 fee each way for cabin travel. Health certificate required for some routes. Brachycephalic breeds restricted.
United Airlines
In-cabin pets (cats and dogs) that fit under the seat. Primarily in-cabin only for the general public — cargo program restricted to military/FSO. Fees around $125–$150 each way. Some routes may require an extra seat.
JetBlue
In-cabin only — JetBlue does not fly pets as cargo. Strict 20lb limit (pet + carrier). Not available on Mint class, codeshare flights, or most international routes including UK and Europe. $125 each way.
Tier 3: Cargo or specialized routes only
These carriers only transport pets as cargo, or have very specific restrictions that make them unsuitable for most pet families on international routes.
Qantas
Cargo only for international routes. Australia's strict quarantine requirements apply regardless of airline — pets must enter via approved facilities. Start preparation at least 6 months before travel.
Emirates
Cargo only for pets — no in-cabin pets allowed on any route. Dubai hub is a major connection point for Asia, Africa, and Europe routes. Well-regarded cargo facilities.
Important: policies change frequently
Airline pet policies are among the fastest-changing rules in international travel. Weight limits, carrier dimensions, fees, and route restrictions can change with little notice. Pawlo tracks these in real time and flags any conflicts with your specific route — but we always recommend confirming directly with your airline within 72 hours of departure.
Brachycephalic breeds
Short-nosed breeds (bulldogs, pugs, French bulldogs, Persian cats, and others) face restrictions across almost every major carrier — especially in cargo. Many airlines refuse them entirely in the hold due to respiratory risks at altitude. If your pet is a brachycephalic breed, Pawlo will flag which airlines can actually accommodate them on your route.
Seasonal restrictions
Most airlines enforce temperature embargoes during summer months — if the temperature at origin, connection, or destination airports exceeds a threshold (typically 85°F / 29°C), pets may be denied boarding even with a valid reservation. Plan accordingly for summer travel, especially to warm-weather destinations.
